2012 ESPN Player Rankings - GASOL

Grizzlies 2012 Roster rankings: Top dawg

From the ESPN.com/NBA website:
ESPN.com and the TrueHoop Network are ranking every NBA player -- and counting them down on Twitter (@NBAonESPN), from No. 500 to No. 1. As the rankings are announced, you can also find them here on the pages of ESPN.com.

Gasol comes in right behind the former NBA Champion and 2011-2012 Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Camby. Wait I mean Tyson Chandler. I get them confused every time!! It's kind of baffling that his brother Pau came up so much higher on the rankings and that Dwight Howard is in the top5 when we shall surely see Marc outplay him in the same conference this year, but that's just how the media works. Kyrie Irving was by far the best rookie this past season but is that enough to crown him an Allstar already? I saw him play in person and he reminded me of a young Chris Paul out there, playing head and shoulders above the rest of his inept teammates, but I'm not ready to just put him ahead of other career Allstars just yet... ESPN voters were though. Also Kevin Garnett played his butt of last season and it was vintage performance night after night. I'm a huge fan of his but it also hurts to see him ahead of Marc Gasol too. Hopefully this season will show where the Grizzlies top dawgs are still moderately underrated when it comes to public opinion polls like this.

Also let's face it, the center is a lost art in the world of basketball this year. Miami won the entire NBA Championship without Shaq, Alonzo Mourning, or Jamaal Magliore. They did it without any center at all! Then Team USA took gold at Londo without a center on the roster... Amazing but true. So having Marc up here at the top just shows that it's kind of a dying postiion in basketball right now. For my money though I wouldn't go to battle without a guy like Marc to enforce the paint ( help pad superstars' stats as the refs give them a free ride to the free throw line - but enough of that). Eventually the cream will rise to the top and teams like LA Lakers, Thunder, and Grizzlies should be the only real contenders this year with their elite BIG MEN. Let's go Grizz!

Other Memphis notables in the 1-30s: Pau Gasol, Derrick Rose.

    Go Grizz!
