Grizzlies defy Wizardry in OT

Another NBA TV broadcasted home game from Beale street results in another overtime win.

Without Rudy Gay the Grizzlies stormed ahead of the Wizards in the second half. Somehow they allowed the Washington Bullets back in this one (as seen in several games this year unfortunately). But they got really mean, and clutch in the final seconds to send to overtime.

ZBO hits the final 2 free throws with 0.3s on the clock. HE IS THE MAN. He is an allstar so far this year, plain and simple.

What do you expect of this Memphis Grizzlies team? More winning. The teams are preparing for them and they still are handling business. They are challenging each time out. They have a starting 5 that ranks up with the best in the game. Statistically they are on par with the Boston Celtics as far as numbers of possessions and scoring. That's the best starting five of the decade, mind you. Very good company to be in right now. Although we don't have any Rasheed Wallace or Eddie House 3pt specialists on the bench, we are showing signs of life on that bench with the rookies stepping up and Jamaal Tinsley knocking down jumpshots, and dancing around defenders.

Don't forget that the Wizards were favorite picks by many to be a second tier playoff team in the east this year up with Orlando and Atlanta. They still have 3 star players on their lineup. They are incredibly dangerous and talented. I am actually quite upset how off the mark they have performed versus those preseason expectations. It's certainly disappointing not having Mike Miller to cheer on his return to Memphis.

Don't mess with me on Monday night!

Wizard chips gave the Grizzlies no room to work. But they worked it out somehow!

Apparently there was a lot of celebrating after the win:

Team America

LIFTOFF

Grizzlies 107-94, downed the Pacers Friday night. It featured a lot of interesting story lines for basketball nerds. Grizzlies had two former players on the opposing team: Dahntay Jones and Earl Watson. As much as I like Watson, he didn't look impressive at all. Jones was ok but it's probably best for his career that he moved on. He's now a leader and key player. He can alter a game by doing all the little things and he can dunk in Yao Ming's face, so you can't go wrong with him.

The Pacers also have a collection of star NCAA heroes like Mike Dunleavey, Troy Murphy, Roy Hibbert, Brandon Rush, and the newest All-American, Tyler Hansbrough. According to Twitter he had 4,000 friends and family come down to Memphis from Poplar Bluff, Missouri to watch him play in the big lights. He was downright impressive.

holding it down for the mtown

ZBO was battling him in the last minutes as the lead was secure. Hansbrough kept going after every ball and fighting for everything. He is still raw and not entirely effective at the NBA level, but due to injury he missed a lot of the learning curve that most rookies experience before Thanksgiving. Next year he could be the next Danilo Gallinari, so watch out. They asked ZBO about the kid after the game and he was like, "I like him, he's scrappy. He keeps working on his game and he'll be a good player." I wish I could find the actual video but that is the gist of it. That was a better review than he gave Louis Amudsen last season!

Of course, it was ZBO and Marc Gasol that won this game for us. They dominated the inside. It was a lot of great team ball all around though. And Mike Conley was strong. He totally outplayed Earl Watson + TJ Ford.

I was hoping to see some Georgetown / UCONN rivalry reunited between Roy Hibbert and Hasheem Thabeet. But Hibbert was a non-factor with foul trouble and Thabeet was never in the game too long to be remembered in this one. Our entire bench only had 7 points in this one! The Grizzlies are capable of burying a lot of teams now and I would expect the season to float around close to a 0.500 record (so good that Brandon Jennings got a $7,500 fine from the league bragging about his team's 0.500 record on Twitter). To me that would be a fantastic result after turning out 3 straight SUB 0.333 seasons.

Why are the Grizzlies Team America? Well. They just faced old school Team America, and beat the tar out of them. They had the flashy old point guard from Texas. They had all the legendary NCAA stars. They had Mister NCAA basketball, PsychoT Hansbrough. They have Kansas Jayhawk Champion, Brandon Rush. Well I think it's time to rally around the Grizzlies as the cool team of the year for NBA. Yep. Very cool.

They are everything America aspires to be.

First you got an African dude who is making a better life for himself and for a whole generation.

Hasheem Thabeet is from Tanzania; Gasol is from Spain; Hamed Haddadi is from Iran. What more do you want? You got the African connection; you got peace in the Middle East; and you have the intelligence and savvy of old Europe backing you!

Wow. This is an International collaboration here. Usually we have to wait every four years to put aside our differences and salute the Olympians. Today we can live in harmony every single day and enjoy a beer, or a soft drink, and watch basketball together. It's a wonderful life after all!

Althought Marko Jaric is not with the team, he spent the last season in a Grizzlies uniform and still embodies the spirit of Team America. Where you can be ugly and still marry one of the top attractive females on the planet! It's vain to paint such a picture but let's face it, the Grizzlies have a kind of hipster magnetism that the really smoking babes cannot resist. It's like pure Obama coolness wearing Nike Dunks and singing very obscure blues karaoke songs in a gay dive bar in Pine Bluffs, Missouri.

Let's get really really gay

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Celtics got all they could handle in Memphis last night! Grizzlies played at the highest level possible. Celtics showed why they are bonafide, number one team in the league right now. Ray Allen hit a miracle THREE BALL in the last possession to put the game away after pass was tipped by Grizzlies Defense with shot clock at one. That iced it.

There were probably 7 or 8 Grizzlies that played out of their skulls this night. You can't ask for anything more from them. I stop myself just short of declaring this the best Grizzlies team of all time…

Personal aside: watched the game out in a bar in New England with mostly college students focused on MNF instead of the Celtics game. but no one could believe how many fans were shown on television in the Memphis stands wearing Celtics green. Absolutely despicable! I told them I never ONCE met anyone from Boston in my 23 years of living in Memphis. I met someone from Boston in Atlanta but never before that. How can there be literally hundreds of Boston fans in Memphis? That doesn't make any sense. They must be poseurs, and if so, that's most pitiable and dishonorable. I have Celtics jersey but I would not be caught dead wearing it to a Memphis Grizzlies game here or in Boston or anywhere.

Cavs @ Grizzlies 12/08/09 – Post-Mortem

On the final possession in OT, Mike Conley went flying down the right lane to the bucket past a determined Shaq. He just got enough velocity to put the right-handed scoop shot in off the glass to give the Grizz the final lead.

A truly inspired team effort kept the Grizzlies within distance of the high octane Cavaliers. Even the unheralded rookie Hasheem Thabeet played his role in this win, making hustle plays and fighting for every possession.

The Grizzlies came out of their last road trip losing two tough ones in Utah and Phoenix. They also blew a game that any viewer would have written off as a twenty-point blowout until the final minute when the Clippers made an impossible come back on the home court.

After the Grizzlies returned from the win in Minnesota they have gone on to knock out two elite teams, which gives them their first 3 game win streak of the season. Believe it or not, they had several of these streaks last year in fact. The fact is that the team really is coming together.

O.J. Mayo is one season away from being a very special player. By the end of this season he could be there if he keeps up what he's done in the last few games. He has shot well over 50% from down town. He has scored close to 20 or more in 6 of last 8 games. They have started calling him the barometer in Memphis, but for now just call him Pimp Juice. He hit an absolutely amazing shot for the Grizzlies, from down late in overtime, to take the lead. Of course Lebron James responded again, with tying free throws.

What do I like most about the Grizzlies win against Cleveland? Despite the superhuman efforts by the Cavaliers, the Grizzlies kept fighting. I thought we were going to get down double digits and then maybe come back to flirt with tying the game in the second half. However, I had no expectation we'd actually come back and win - that was just unthinkable. But these Grizzlies are showing more life than a Memphis team has shown in a while. Lebron James is the best in basketball right now, period. He is amazing. But Memphis has its own amazing!

In sports you can eek by a few wins on off nights when teams don't take you seriously. But this is serious play in the last 2 games most especially. Teams are setting the pace for the season and the Grizzlies pace is at a high level.

When they were down the Grizzlies kept fighting and it showed on all the players' faces. They played through major adversity and with Marc Gasol in foul trouble a lot of the night. And they came back, and won!!!!

ACC Championship this weekend - GT vs Clemson

Dec 5th

  1. Georgia Tech fans punch UGA inbreds in the face
  2. Devalued ACC title game?
"Yes, the ACC championship lost more than a bit of luster last Saturday, but they’re still going to play the game. Somebody has to win it. Might as well be Tech." - AJC

Howlin' at the Moon

Grizzlies now are headed back the right direction after that win last night. It was not pretty but to beat a team that was riding high, at home, at the end of a road trip, is quite good.

And all eyes were on Rudy Gay and Mayo since Wolves rumored to be after one next summer and traded the other last summer. They want to see what might have been, especially with Kevin Love on the sidelines. Jury is still out on that one even though OJ Mayo is reigning ROY runner-up and stepping his way to being captain of the US Men's Olympic team for the future. Now don't the Wolves wish they picked Sam Young instead of Wayne Ellington or Ty Lawson? All those first point guards drafted by Minnesota and we got the better one at #36 in the draft!

  1. I just was reading this very interesting interview they got on 3SOB's with Heisley, good stuff: Chatting with the Big Cheese

Way out West

Removing that deer in headlights look tonight at Target Center

Grizzlies tonight face another road team in Minnesota. Winless in their first 5 game western road trip, the Grizzlies already should have turned the corner on this one with wins in Portland and Los Angeles. However, they were turned back in the 4th quarter against a poor Clippers team. Now the Grizzlies can wrap this road trip up with a 2 for 5 tonight.

The Grizzlies have not really surprised anyone yet but have caught the attention of most teams. Only the most deep and elite teams can afford to take a night off against the Grizzlies now. Surprisingly we share a similar 0.333% win record as other early season playoff candidates Toronto, Washington, Charlotte and New Orleans. It's starting to be time where we compete nightly against strong teams like Denver, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, etc.

The Wolves should be an easy victim, but we must play a greater game than our last match that was won 90-80. In that game they played without their franchise big man, Al Jefferson. Tonight he is taking it upon himself to promise victory. Unless the Grizzlies rebound with great vigor after the brutalization in Utah, the evening negates all Grizzly hunting practices, with the form of the rabid wolf snarling above the rafters.

The Wolves have a taste for blood after a surprise win in Denver
