Grizzlies defy Wizardry in OT

Another NBA TV broadcasted home game from Beale street results in another overtime win.

Without Rudy Gay the Grizzlies stormed ahead of the Wizards in the second half. Somehow they allowed the Washington Bullets back in this one (as seen in several games this year unfortunately). But they got really mean, and clutch in the final seconds to send to overtime.

ZBO hits the final 2 free throws with 0.3s on the clock. HE IS THE MAN. He is an allstar so far this year, plain and simple.

What do you expect of this Memphis Grizzlies team? More winning. The teams are preparing for them and they still are handling business. They are challenging each time out. They have a starting 5 that ranks up with the best in the game. Statistically they are on par with the Boston Celtics as far as numbers of possessions and scoring. That's the best starting five of the decade, mind you. Very good company to be in right now. Although we don't have any Rasheed Wallace or Eddie House 3pt specialists on the bench, we are showing signs of life on that bench with the rookies stepping up and Jamaal Tinsley knocking down jumpshots, and dancing around defenders.

Don't forget that the Wizards were favorite picks by many to be a second tier playoff team in the east this year up with Orlando and Atlanta. They still have 3 star players on their lineup. They are incredibly dangerous and talented. I am actually quite upset how off the mark they have performed versus those preseason expectations. It's certainly disappointing not having Mike Miller to cheer on his return to Memphis.

Don't mess with me on Monday night!

Wizard chips gave the Grizzlies no room to work. But they worked it out somehow!

Apparently there was a lot of celebrating after the win:

Team America

LIFTOFF

Grizzlies 107-94, downed the Pacers Friday night. It featured a lot of interesting story lines for basketball nerds. Grizzlies had two former players on the opposing team: Dahntay Jones and Earl Watson. As much as I like Watson, he didn't look impressive at all. Jones was ok but it's probably best for his career that he moved on. He's now a leader and key player. He can alter a game by doing all the little things and he can dunk in Yao Ming's face, so you can't go wrong with him.

The Pacers also have a collection of star NCAA heroes like Mike Dunleavey, Troy Murphy, Roy Hibbert, Brandon Rush, and the newest All-American, Tyler Hansbrough. According to Twitter he had 4,000 friends and family come down to Memphis from Poplar Bluff, Missouri to watch him play in the big lights. He was downright impressive.

holding it down for the mtown

ZBO was battling him in the last minutes as the lead was secure. Hansbrough kept going after every ball and fighting for everything. He is still raw and not entirely effective at the NBA level, but due to injury he missed a lot of the learning curve that most rookies experience before Thanksgiving. Next year he could be the next Danilo Gallinari, so watch out. They asked ZBO about the kid after the game and he was like, "I like him, he's scrappy. He keeps working on his game and he'll be a good player." I wish I could find the actual video but that is the gist of it. That was a better review than he gave Louis Amudsen last season!

Of course, it was ZBO and Marc Gasol that won this game for us. They dominated the inside. It was a lot of great team ball all around though. And Mike Conley was strong. He totally outplayed Earl Watson + TJ Ford.

I was hoping to see some Georgetown / UCONN rivalry reunited between Roy Hibbert and Hasheem Thabeet. But Hibbert was a non-factor with foul trouble and Thabeet was never in the game too long to be remembered in this one. Our entire bench only had 7 points in this one! The Grizzlies are capable of burying a lot of teams now and I would expect the season to float around close to a 0.500 record (so good that Brandon Jennings got a $7,500 fine from the league bragging about his team's 0.500 record on Twitter). To me that would be a fantastic result after turning out 3 straight SUB 0.333 seasons.

Why are the Grizzlies Team America? Well. They just faced old school Team America, and beat the tar out of them. They had the flashy old point guard from Texas. They had all the legendary NCAA stars. They had Mister NCAA basketball, PsychoT Hansbrough. They have Kansas Jayhawk Champion, Brandon Rush. Well I think it's time to rally around the Grizzlies as the cool team of the year for NBA. Yep. Very cool.

They are everything America aspires to be.

First you got an African dude who is making a better life for himself and for a whole generation.

Hasheem Thabeet is from Tanzania; Gasol is from Spain; Hamed Haddadi is from Iran. What more do you want? You got the African connection; you got peace in the Middle East; and you have the intelligence and savvy of old Europe backing you!

Wow. This is an International collaboration here. Usually we have to wait every four years to put aside our differences and salute the Olympians. Today we can live in harmony every single day and enjoy a beer, or a soft drink, and watch basketball together. It's a wonderful life after all!

Althought Marko Jaric is not with the team, he spent the last season in a Grizzlies uniform and still embodies the spirit of Team America. Where you can be ugly and still marry one of the top attractive females on the planet! It's vain to paint such a picture but let's face it, the Grizzlies have a kind of hipster magnetism that the really smoking babes cannot resist. It's like pure Obama coolness wearing Nike Dunks and singing very obscure blues karaoke songs in a gay dive bar in Pine Bluffs, Missouri.

Let's get really really gay

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Building Steam with a Grain of Salt

Celtics got all they could handle in Memphis last night! Grizzlies played at the highest level possible. Celtics showed why they are bonafide, number one team in the league right now. Ray Allen hit a miracle THREE BALL in the last possession to put the game away after pass was tipped by Grizzlies Defense with shot clock at one. That iced it.

There were probably 7 or 8 Grizzlies that played out of their skulls this night. You can't ask for anything more from them. I stop myself just short of declaring this the best Grizzlies team of all time…

Personal aside: watched the game out in a bar in New England with mostly college students focused on MNF instead of the Celtics game. but no one could believe how many fans were shown on television in the Memphis stands wearing Celtics green. Absolutely despicable! I told them I never ONCE met anyone from Boston in my 23 years of living in Memphis. I met someone from Boston in Atlanta but never before that. How can there be literally hundreds of Boston fans in Memphis? That doesn't make any sense. They must be poseurs, and if so, that's most pitiable and dishonorable. I have Celtics jersey but I would not be caught dead wearing it to a Memphis Grizzlies game here or in Boston or anywhere.

Cavs @ Grizzlies 12/08/09 – Post-Mortem

On the final possession in OT, Mike Conley went flying down the right lane to the bucket past a determined Shaq. He just got enough velocity to put the right-handed scoop shot in off the glass to give the Grizz the final lead.

A truly inspired team effort kept the Grizzlies within distance of the high octane Cavaliers. Even the unheralded rookie Hasheem Thabeet played his role in this win, making hustle plays and fighting for every possession.

The Grizzlies came out of their last road trip losing two tough ones in Utah and Phoenix. They also blew a game that any viewer would have written off as a twenty-point blowout until the final minute when the Clippers made an impossible come back on the home court.

After the Grizzlies returned from the win in Minnesota they have gone on to knock out two elite teams, which gives them their first 3 game win streak of the season. Believe it or not, they had several of these streaks last year in fact. The fact is that the team really is coming together.

O.J. Mayo is one season away from being a very special player. By the end of this season he could be there if he keeps up what he's done in the last few games. He has shot well over 50% from down town. He has scored close to 20 or more in 6 of last 8 games. They have started calling him the barometer in Memphis, but for now just call him Pimp Juice. He hit an absolutely amazing shot for the Grizzlies, from down late in overtime, to take the lead. Of course Lebron James responded again, with tying free throws.

What do I like most about the Grizzlies win against Cleveland? Despite the superhuman efforts by the Cavaliers, the Grizzlies kept fighting. I thought we were going to get down double digits and then maybe come back to flirt with tying the game in the second half. However, I had no expectation we'd actually come back and win - that was just unthinkable. But these Grizzlies are showing more life than a Memphis team has shown in a while. Lebron James is the best in basketball right now, period. He is amazing. But Memphis has its own amazing!

In sports you can eek by a few wins on off nights when teams don't take you seriously. But this is serious play in the last 2 games most especially. Teams are setting the pace for the season and the Grizzlies pace is at a high level.

When they were down the Grizzlies kept fighting and it showed on all the players' faces. They played through major adversity and with Marc Gasol in foul trouble a lot of the night. And they came back, and won!!!!

ACC Championship this weekend - GT vs Clemson

  1. Georgia Tech fans punch UGA inbreds in the face
  2. Devalued ACC title game?
"Yes, the ACC championship lost more than a bit of luster last Saturday, but they’re still going to play the game. Somebody has to win it. Might as well be Tech." - AJC

Howlin' at the Moon

Grizzlies now are headed back the right direction after that win last night. It was not pretty but to beat a team that was riding high, at home, at the end of a road trip, is quite good.

And all eyes were on Rudy Gay and Mayo since Wolves rumored to be after one next summer and traded the other last summer. They want to see what might have been, especially with Kevin Love on the sidelines. Jury is still out on that one even though OJ Mayo is reigning ROY runner-up and stepping his way to being captain of the US Men's Olympic team for the future. Now don't the Wolves wish they picked Sam Young instead of Wayne Ellington or Ty Lawson? All those first point guards drafted by Minnesota and we got the better one at #36 in the draft!

Way out West

Removing that deer in headlights look tonight at Target Center

Grizzlies tonight face another road team in Minnesota. Winless in their first 5 game western road trip, the Grizzlies already should have turned the corner on this one with wins in Portland and Los Angeles. However, they were turned back in the 4th quarter against a poor Clippers team. Now the Grizzlies can wrap this road trip up with a 2 for 5 tonight.

The Grizzlies have not really surprised anyone yet but have caught the attention of most teams. Only the most deep and elite teams can afford to take a night off against the Grizzlies now. Surprisingly we share a similar 0.333% win record as other early season playoff candidates Toronto, Washington, Charlotte and New Orleans. It's starting to be time where we compete nightly against strong teams like Denver, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, etc.

The Wolves should be an easy victim, but we must play a greater game than our last match that was won 90-80. In that game they played without their franchise big man, Al Jefferson. Tonight he is taking it upon himself to promise victory. Unless the Grizzlies rebound with great vigor after the brutalization in Utah, the evening negates all Grizzly hunting practices, with the form of the rabid wolf snarling above the rafters.

Eighty Percent

Rudy is happy and winning

Grizz are now 80% on last 5 games. Four out of five son. They could have probably beaten the Bucks as well but they are playing super smart, inspired ball. That would have made this a five game win streak but you can still handle this after a terrible start out west earlier this month:

Minny: 97-87 W
LAC: 106-91 W
Philly: 102-97 W
Buck: 98-103 L
SAC: 116-105 W

The next two games this week might be awfully more tough games. They go to Phoenix and then to Portland. These are both great playoff teams and one has already destroyed us on our home court this month (Blazers).

You gotta love seeing the Grizzlies coming together now though. The rookies look more confident and capable. Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, and ZBO are all playing at elite levels as high as they have been on their careers. You can't ask for more from them. It looks like Jamaal Tinsley can actually be a good backup to Conley. Although he has not done the defense, he knows how to run the offense.

Teams might actually not look past the Grizzlies later this season as we start gaining momentum and terrorizing the better teams. Look out if we can steal a win later this week out west.

11/18/09 Clippers win post-mortem

WIN STREAK!!!!

keys to the super bowl
  • MARC GASOL. ¿¿¿Tienes Fuego???

  • Rudy, OJ, ZBO all played like they were on the same page. Efficiency was high and there seemed to be less deer in headlights. The extra pass was there. The guy running in transition was fed. The open man actually knocked down the shot. Probably some of the best team ball of the season. But the opponent certainly helped them out. Regardless it was satisfying to finally see them playing as a team rather than individuals.
  • Clippers are pretty awful. Really. I think the empty FedexForum lulled them out of the gates. They never knew what hit them. When Mardy Collins gets his first bucket of the season and Steve Novak is coming in at center, you know Dunleavy has lost all hope in his starters at this point.
  • Bench output. Finally got some OOMPH. The rookies look good, and, it kill me to say this, so did Marcus Williams! Haters face turning to a frown.

Worker's Economy

With nationwide unemployment at record levels of one out of ten, and the underemployed in this country somewhere around the thirty-three percent, it makes sense that some guys are coming into the NBA for much less than their value this year. Grizzlies have had some confusion at the front-court this year, so let's look at who was available. Forget about how we botched this year's "weak" draft full of point guards. We know we failed that one, but what about the old veteran free agency contest? Initially it looked like we were at the lead of the pack with the Allen Iverson signing, but that situation quickly went by the wayside before Iverson could even play a single game in front of his new home crowd.

The 2009 free agent guard shoe horn of redemption

Earl Boykins

  • Washington Wizards asked him step in for injured Mike James and Javaris Crittenton. Spent last season at "Virtus Bologna Fier" earning around the same salary as AI got from Memphis Grizzlies.

    Jason Williams

  • Williams was a Memphis bad boy from the playoff years. He went on to win a World Championship in Miami. There were rumors he'd play in Israel last season but instead he chilled at home in Orlando. Now he's an important new hire as the Magic reloaded to compete again for a second finals run with hopefully better results. He addressed a major need as demonstrated when All-star Jameer Nelson was injured most of the post-season.
  • Not many cheers for JWill when he sank a few open shots in pre-season at the FedexForum. I guess he doesn't have too many fans left in Memphis after all.

    Jamaal Tinsley

  • Has not played in the league since some time two seasons ago when he was forced to leave the team because of behavioral issues. Sounds like a stand-up guy ready to lead the team that claims to have no leadership. But he does average high numbers of assists and steals which are unknown to this year's Memphis Grizzlies.
  • Allegedly the Cleveland Cavaliers looked at him to replace their mentally deranged back-up guard, Delonte West.

    Carlos Arroyo

  • Failed to win the starting job at Orlando two seasons ago but had the job due to injuries. Orlando wanted to go another direction, so he went to the Maccabi team instead of Jason Williams for the 2008-2009 season, where he dominated.
  • Accomplishments include single-handedly defeating the "Dream Team" US. Men's Olympic basketball team.
  • Miami has successfully integrated Arroyo to their team as their backup floor general.

    Carlos Delfino

  • Spent last year on team Khimki Moscow Region as one of highest paid European players.
  • Has played terribly and fallen behind second round pick, Jodie Meeks from Kentucky, on the depth charts.

    Wally Szczerbiak

  • Failed to make an impact after being traded to Cleveland from Seattle in the Ben Wallace trade. Did not contribute much to their failures in the post-season, hence is now out of a job and possibly forced into early retirement.
  • Still unemployed…

    Stephon Marbury

  • nothing to say here,

    Cuttino Mobley

  • Early retirement.

    Allen Iverson

  • not even funny

    Dan Dickau

  • A day late and a buck short award.

    Will Solomon

  • Another former Grizzly player, who paid his dues in Europe and returned for Raptors in 2008. But didn't last.
  • Has just recently been let go from the Turkish champions Fenerbahçe Ülker. Available!

How Georgia Tech can get to the National Championship

Georgia Tech is BCS bound! Best record since I was not really paying attention and only 10 years old, when they won the National Championship, shared with the University of Colorado.

There are Grizzlies in this photo if you look close enough in the background. Budinger was my number one target for the 27th pick this year. Houston got him middle of second round and now he's a starter on that winning team.

Watch for the block on Rudy Gay at 1:42.

    Grizzed by AI

In what could be Iverson's final game in the NBA, http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore?gid=2009110613, Kobe Bryant scored over 40 points in a dismantling win at home over the Grizzlies. AI finished with less than 10 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

Grizzlies returned to the same arena 24 hours later to get another beating by the reigning last place team from the previous season that is playing without its number one lottery draft pick. In the final moments the Grizzlies continued to foul the Clippers on every possession, and could not get any answers on offense. Because of poor free throw shooting by the Clippers, the Grizzlies still had a chance for a last second prayer three to tie the game, but it just barely missed.

The team will try to turn the page without Iverson as they return home to Memphis for some home games finally after a winless road trip out west. For theirs is the last place in the Western Conference, but luckily a better record than the winless New Jersey Nets who play with only one starting player on the roster currently, due to injury and sickness.

Some questions remain for the Grizzlies having waived both Mike Taylor and Trey Glider. Now also without AI on the impotent bench, there is the unknown concept of three point shooting, defense, and depth at the power forward position – being vacated by Hakim Warrick. It is not probable these positions will be filled with talents greater than unemployed summer league leftovers however, as indicated already in comments made by the management when announcing the relinquishment of Trey Glider's $25,000 salary from the books. Returning to the three year plan, as it began with the ejaculation of Pau Gasol, one has to wonder if another three year plan is to be set in motion as no noticeable improvement has been made since the Spaniard parted ways with his Grizzlies franchise.

    Ghost State Walruses

Hold on Grizz fans, the season is about to go into overdrive.
    Iverson is back.
Furthermore, he wants to play start, right out of the gate.

The national media is having a field day with it. Just when the Grizzlies were looking strong against both good and bad teams, The Answer rings down upon the locker room.

    strange rock n rollers
I will show you how to win, by winning.

It's as selfish as it gets. "My butt is sore from being on the bench". Of course that is true, you been injured. We are losing most of our games. But is it panic button time? For AI it has been panic button time for too long now.

Michael Jordan came back to play for the fictitious basketball team, the Washington Wizards, from 2001 until 2003. He started 120 out of 142 games in which he played in those 2 seasons, and averaged close to 35 minutes a game throughout the duration. Iverson expects the same spotlight I think.

    Is there Grizzlies after 30?

So how did we get here? AI came in to play the vet role, off the bench. Right? He said he had a new coach and wanted to come and do what he wants for us to be successful. So how is he already questioning the strategy? He is 34 years old. Michael Jordan was 37 when he came back for the Wizards and started the large majority of the games. But Jordan probably didn't sit out all summer waiting for a deal at the last minute and get injured just before preseason. Iverson has to give his team time and maybe he will get those 35 minutes a game.

But this is the Grizzlies. And we're losing. We're 0.250% win percentage already. Right on track to finish in the 20-26 wins again. But what if we improve? What if the chemistry happens? If you are Iverson you aren't just interested in the Grizzlies winning. He wants to be the chemistry. He wants to be the guy that single-handedly came in and saved this franchise. He isn't going to get there with 11 minutes a night.

Iverson is not going to wait for weeks to go by and to fit in to the rotation slowly as the losses pile up. He is going to directly assert himself because that's what superstars do. However, he did not read my laws of robotics blog post from last month. By doing this bad press on the Grizzlies he is hurting the team. He certainly is reaching out to OJ Mayo and Mike Conley Jr, to offer them assistance. He's saying bench one or both of them and let me control this team from the outset. Mike Conley Jr. is maybe one inch taller than AI, but he has 25 pounds more of muscle. OJ Mayo is several inches taller and much bigger. How is AI going to improve our most glaring weakness on defense? By scoring more? We have obviously scored plenty with ZBO chipping in a career high chunk each night so far.

Iverson's outburst is obviously illogical and unprofessional…
Grizzlies handling of this roster is obviously illogical and insulting to the existing players and fans (Thabeet draft pick specifically)…

No balance can even these chaotic elements out in a win or loss of Grizzlies tonight.

The Ghost State Walrus will have to confront the Grizzlies, and I definitely feel pity for them. The Grizzlies are playing on edges of sanity that I doubt any other team has to play for this season. With all of these angry bears on the team competing for their role in the return to respectability, someone is going to get caught taking the brunt of our wrath. Tonight could easily be that night. I look for explosive performances from a number of players as they try to work out the issues on the court, because it ain't going to be settled off the court.

Let's hope for the best for AI and Grizz.
