Kings and Grizzlies 11/18/08 pregame notes

If you watched Phoenix Suns at all this year, as I have, you would ask who that scrawny white guy with the strange name is that keeps spelling old man Steve Nash. Goran Dragic is the new man being compared to Beno Udrih, a fellow Slovenian. And that's who the Grizzlies will be facing tonight, the floor general of the Sacramento Kings.

I found that Slovenia is roughly one fifth the size of Tennessee. How does such a remote little country produce FOUR current NBA players? (It would be 5 if Bostjan Nachbar was still here). It's currently a hotspot for recruiting as Beno Udrih signed a 5-year contract this summer with Sacramento. He's officially made it in the NBA, and I would keep my eyes on the development of Goran Dragic as he appears to be a much larger and athletic version of Beno. To complete the comparison of similarities between the two gifted young Slovenians, both are left-handed. WOW!

  • Beno like beano!

Then who is Jason Thompson? He the King's new stud draft pick sleeper from Rider University Broncs! Did not travel far from his hometown in New Jersey either. I wonder if there is much integration with Princeton and Rider? I can't find anything on Google, despite that they're located in nearly the same city; maybe separated by a mere 2 miles.

  • The New Jersey Devil coming to Memphis?

They'll need solid performance by these players with franchise player Kevin Martin sitting on the bench. Their other rookie, which Memphis drafted, is Donte Green. He plays less a factor but if he gets some time out there he might try to make Memphis regret trading him, so watch out! It'd be nice to see Darrel Arthur put these other rookies in their place because his last few games have been very rookie-esque.

Last, but not least (that would be Shelden Williams), we get another familiar face off their bench, who's way past his prime but it's good to see him back home:

  • BobbyJ!

  • Ivy has to manage the roster better. On there are clear stats pairings that indicate certain players on this team go better with others.
  • And one of those pairings is Kyle Lowry with everyone else. He needs to start over Conley I think
  • Allow Darko good minutes at the 4 – I think his matchups are good in this one
  • Rudy Gay get focused. You want that big contract? Allstar? BRING IT!
  • Kings game will be decided in 4th quarter so plan accordingly

  • Not letting Rudy get his fifty points, as Grant Hill and Michael Finley both scored over 20 on Kings in last 2 games. Rudy is like 15 years younger than both and should be able to get 30 points in the first half alone
  • Failing to deny Spencer Hawes, who went hog wild on our last meeting in March
  • Stay in the game late; just like the NBA season as a whole, "it's not how you start, but how you finish"
